The Spacewalker

Hello everyone!

Welcome to a new post! You might have noticed that it has been a while since I posted something. This was simply because I was too busy with other things. First of all, I had to take some exams. Of course, I had to study. I also had some other deadlines for which I had to do stuff. In my off time, I mostly worked on some music and played some games. More on that ‘music’ subject later :). But oh well, here I am with a new post!

This time I attempted something I hadn’t really succeeded at before; drawing a (real) human face. You might know that I drew Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender before. However, Katara is an animated character, which makes it easier. This time, I wanted to challenge myself by drawing an actual human being with only my pencil and my eraser.

So, now, I had to pick who I wanted to draw. As you might know, I watch a lot of television series in my free time. One of my favourite shows is ‘The 100’. Season 7 is ongoing right now. Because of this, I thought it was a nice opportunity to draw someone from The 100.
The show has a lot of amazing characters. However, I had to choose. I tried picking my favourite character. After some thinking, I concluded that ‘Raven Rayes’ is my favourite character from the series. Raven Rayes is portrayed by Lindsey Morgan. More about her character later. First of all, let’s start drawing!

I started out by drawing the shape of her face. This actually took more time than anticipated. I really wanted to get this right. The shape of a face is the foundation of the face, so it’s really important.
Then, I tried deciding where different aspects of her face should be. Her eyes, nose, mouth and ear. This also took quite some time. After this, I tried creating her eyes. As you might know, eyes are really something that distinguishes one person from the other. I added the eyes pretty early, to get an idea what the drawing would look like when it was finished.
I also started working on a bit of her hair and a bit of her jacket. My progress thus far can be seen below!

Now, let me tell you something more about the show.
The 100 starts off in space. Quite some time ago, the world became uninhabitable. The air became toxic. Because of this, people fled to space. They created a space station called ‘The Ark’.
However, at this moment in time, the supplies in the Ark were running out, so they had to do something. When you committed a felony on the Ark, you were simply ‘floated’ into space. This wasn’t the case for children. They were locked up.

The leaders of the Ark decided that they wanted to check whether Earth was habitable again. To do this, they sent 100 delinquents to Earth. As all adults that committed a crime were floated, these 100 delinquents were all minors.
The 100 is mainly about these 100 people on the ground. However, life on the Ark is also shown.

The Ark’s design was pretty good. But it wasn’t perfect. Sometimes something malfunctioned. When this something was inside of the Ark, it wasn’t a problem. A mechanic could simply fix it. Only, if something malfunctioned on the outside, it was a bit harder. You can’t simply walk into space and fix it.
To fix one of these issues, someone had to go into space. They had to suit up completely and fix the problem. One of these ‘Space Walkers’ is Raven Reyes. Raven is a smart, chill character. She knows a lot about technology. Because of this, she’s perfect for the job.
I really like the character Raven. Her story starts out kind of shallow, but later on, she gets a lot more depth. A lot of things happen to her, which really changes her as a character.

But enough about the show, let’s get back to drawing. After drawing what you can see above, I tried finishing up her hair. Though I eventually tweaked her hair a bit, I think it already looks great in the picture that you can see below.

At the start of the post, I mentioned that I was working on some music. Well, I’m glad to announce that on Friday next week (July 10th), I will be releasing my fourth single. The single is called ‘Tomorrow’. It’s actually a bit different than the music you are used to hearing from me. So stay tuned for that one!

As I said earlier, Raven Reyes is portrayed by Lindsey Morgan. Lindsey Morgan is an American actress. She is mainly known for her appearance in The 100. Recently, she also had her debut as a director. She directed the latest episode of The 100.

But back to drawing. First of all, I added her nose and her mouth. This was actually quite a pain to do. It was really hard to get the shape and the shading of both of them right. I also finished of the right side of her jacket.

Now there was a kind of finished face. However, I wasn’t quite satisfied yet. Some parts were barely noticeable (like her eyes). Also, there wasn’t that much contrast. You couldn’t, for instance, tell her jacket and her hair apart.
To fix this, I took my pencil and darkened in some areas. Also, I erased some areas lightly (making them lighter but not erasing them completely). I also made her hair a bit ‘denser’. Lindsey Morgan has dark brown hair. But, as you can see in the picture above, there are some white spots in her hair. This gives the hair a ‘lighter’ feeling. I fixed this by simply colouring in the white parts and making the dark parts darker.

Finally, I had to tweak some things. One eye was bigger than the other one, the ear wasn’t really visible, her mouth seemed off, the shape of her nose wasn’t quite right, etc. Oh, I said ‘some’ things? I actually meant a lot of things.

In the end, I’m happy with how it turned out. It isn’t perfect, but it’s something. I’d like to say that I succeeded drawing a real, human face. the final result can be seen below.
